PTE Core vs IELTS for Express Entry: which test should you take?

Both PTE Core and IELTS General Training are accepted by IRCC for Express Entry, and both convert to the same Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. The right choice comes down to how each test is scored and how you perform under each format.

The short answer

IRCC treats PTE Core and IELTS General Training equally. Neither earns you more CRS points for the same CLB level. Choose PTE Core if you want fast, AI-based scoring and you are comfortable speaking into a computer. Choose IELTS if you would rather sit with a human examiner and you already know its format.

How each test converts to CLB

IRCC does not use your raw PTE Core score or your IELTS band directly. It converts each skill to a Canadian Language Benchmark level, and your CLB is what earns CRS points. The conversion tables differ by test, but the end result is the same currency: your CLB. For the full PTE Core numbers, see our PTE Core CLB chart.

The rule that applies to bothIRCC reads each of the four skills separately and sets your official CLB from your lowest skill. This holds for PTE Core and IELTS alike, so one weak skill caps your profile on either test.

Which test is easier?

No test is easier for everyone. AI scoring on PTE Core rewards clear, steady, well-structured speech and predictable task templates, and some people find a microphone less stressful than a live examiner. IELTS uses a human examiner for speaking, which suits people who are more comfortable in a conversation than talking to a screen. Your writing habits, timing under pressure and comfort with each format matter more than the test brand.

How to choose

Take PTE Core if you want results in a few business days, you are comfortable speaking to a computer, and you like consistent, template-friendly tasks. Take IELTS General Training if you prefer a human examiner, you have already practised its format, or PTE Core test centres are less convenient for you. Either way the target is the same: the CLB your Express Entry profile needs.
