PTE Academic or PTE Core for study?
PTE Academic is the test for study and university admission. PTE Core is for immigration, such as Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs and work permits. Canadian colleges and universities do not accept PTE Core for admission, so if you are applying to study, you need PTE Academic. Taking the wrong test is a common and expensive mistake.
What PTE Academic score do you need?
There is no single national cut-off. Each college and university sets its own PTE Academic requirement, and it varies by program. As a rough guide, many undergraduate and diploma programs look for an overall score in the high 50s to mid 60s, while competitive or postgraduate programs often ask for 65 or higher, sometimes with a minimum in each section.
PTE Academic and your study permit
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) ended on 8 November 2024, so all study permit applications now go through the regular process. Language proof is handled through your institution: you first meet the English requirement your college or university sets, receive your letter of acceptance, and then apply for the study permit. Your PTE Academic result needs to be valid and to match the requirement your institution used to admit you.
Score validity and planning
PTE Academic results are valid for two years. Plan your test date so your result is still valid when your institution reviews your application and when IRCC receives your study permit application. If you are close to a deadline, PTE Academic is often chosen for its fast, AI-based scoring.
