Why Write from Dictation matters so much
In Write from Dictation you hear a sentence once and type it exactly. It looks small, but it contributes to two skills at the same time. Each correct word helps both your Listening and your Writing score, so the return on a few well-practised sentences is high. If Writing is the skill holding your CLB back, this task is one of the first places to look.
How the task is scored
You earn credit for each correct word in the right order, so partial answers still count. Spelling matters, and a misspelled word does not count. That means clear listening and accurate spelling both feed your score, and small habits like reviewing common tricky words pay off quickly.
A simple method
- Focus fully as the audio plays, since you hear it only once.
- Jot the first letters or key words as you listen, then rebuild the full sentence.
- Write the words you are sure of first, then fill the gaps.
- Check spelling before you move on, because a wrong spelling scores zero for that word.
Practise a set of these every day. The task is predictable, so steady practice turns it into reliable points. See how those points map to your target in the PTE Core CLB chart.
