PTE Core Respond to a Situation: how to answer well

Respond to a Situation is one of the tasks that makes PTE Core feel like real life. You read and hear a short everyday scenario, then say what you would actually say in that moment. It rewards a natural, relevant response.

What the task is

You are given a short everyday situation, both on screen and in audio. After a brief prep window you record a spoken response describing what you would say in that situation. It is a speaking task, so content, oral fluency and pronunciation all matter, and the response should sound like a real person handling a real moment.

A structure that keeps you natural

  • Acknowledge: show you understood the situation in one short sentence.
  • Respond: say what you would do or ask, directly addressing the scenario.
  • Close: finish politely, the way you would in a real conversation.

This shape stops you from rambling and makes sure your answer actually fits the situation, which is what the task is testing.

Sound like yourselfSpeak the way you would to a colleague or a neighbour. A polite, natural, relevant answer beats a rehearsed speech that ignores the scenario.

Practise everyday scenarios

Rehearse common situations, such as asking for help, making a request, or apologising, and record short natural responses. Keep them relevant and fluent. For broader delivery habits, see our PTE Core Speaking tips.
