PTE Core Answer Short Question: quick, accurate answers

Answer Short Question is exactly what it sounds like. You hear a short question and reply with a word or two. It is scored as correct or incorrect, so the goal is a fast, accurate answer, not a long one.

How the task works

You listen to a short, everyday question and give a brief spoken answer. There are no marks for extra words. A one-word or few-word reply that answers the question correctly scores full credit, and a wrong or missing answer scores nothing. This task affects your Listening score, so clear understanding is the key skill.

How to win the easy points

Listen for the key word

Most questions turn on a single idea, such as a place, a job, a number or an object. Catch that idea and you have your answer.

Keep it short

Resist the urge to explain. A short, direct answer is what the task rewards, and adding words only creates room for error.

Do not overthinkThese are common-knowledge questions, not trick questions. Trust the first clear answer that fits and say it plainly.

Build quick recall

Practise with sets of short questions and answer out loud without pausing. The skill is fast comprehension and a calm, clear reply. To sharpen your ear more broadly, see our PTE Core Listening tips.
