PTE Academic Re-tell Lecture: how to score higher

Re-tell Lecture is one of the tasks that trips up new test takers. You listen to a short lecture, then retell it in your own words. Good notes and a steady delivery matter more than remembering every detail.

How the task works

You listen to a lecture of up to about ninety seconds, get a short prep window, then speak for about forty seconds to retell what you heard. It is a speaking task scored on content, oral fluency and pronunciation, so you need to cover the main points clearly while keeping a smooth pace.

A method that works

Take notes as you listen

You hear the lecture once, so jot down the main idea and a few keywords or names as they come. Notes carry your memory when the recording ends.

Retell with a simple shape

Open with the topic in one sentence, give two or three main points from your notes, and close with a short summary. A clear shape is easier to deliver and easier for the scorer to reward.

Fluency over completenessYou will not remember everything, and that is fine. A smooth answer that covers the main points scores better than a broken one that tries to include every detail.

Build the skill

Practise with short lectures and talks, take quick notes, and retell them out loud inside forty seconds. Record yourself and listen for pauses and unclear sounds. For broader delivery habits, the same fundamentals apply as in any speaking task, so pair this with timed practice from your study plan.
