How to improve your PTE Academic score

If your PTE Academic score is short of your target, the fix is rarely more hours across the board. It is usually a few focused changes on the skill and tasks that are actually holding you back.

Find the skill that is capping you

Take a scored practice test and look at each of the four skills separately. Your effort should go to the lowest one, not the one you enjoy most. A single weak skill often decides whether you reach your band, so that is where the fastest gains are.

Target the high-value tasks

Several tasks feed two skills at once, so they give the best return for your time. Put extra practice into Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Write from Dictation and Summarize Spoken Text. Improving these lifts more than one section score together.

Fix the basics that machines rewardPTE Academic is AI-scored, so clear pronunciation, a steady pace, correct grammar and the right length move the score more than advanced vocabulary. Clean up those basics first.

Practise under time, then review

Always practise against the clock, because pace is part of the score. After each attempt, review your mistakes and track the two or three errors you repeat, then drill those specifically. Aimless practice rarely moves a stuck score.

Know when to get help

If you are one band away in a single skill, targeted coaching on that skill is often the quickest route, because you get feedback on exactly what to change. Build the work into a simple schedule with our PTE Academic study plan.
