Accepted for study and admission
Canadian colleges and universities accept PTE Academic as proof of English for admission. Each institution sets its own required score, so acceptance is real but the exact band you need depends on your program. Once you meet that requirement and receive your letter of acceptance, your study permit application relies on it.
Not used for permanent residence
PTE Academic is for study. It is not the test IRCC uses for permanent residence. For Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs and work permits, IRCC uses PTE Core, which converts to Canadian Language Benchmark levels. If your plan is immigration rather than study, you need PTE Core instead. See PTE Academic vs PTE Core to be sure which one fits.
How to use it
Check the PTE Academic requirement on your program page, prepare to hit that band with a small buffer, and book your test so your result is valid when your institution and IRCC review your application. Results are valid for two years. For the score ranges to aim for, see our PTE Academic university score guide, and for the study permit process see PTE Academic for a Canadian study permit.
